Oshanla
Oshanla
Oshanla is the best-known female path of Obatalá, and an Orisha in her own right. She is a deity of wisdom, clarity, peace and mysticism. She is known as the Great Orisha, Ancient Orisha of the White Shine, and the Beautiful Light Appears.
Oshanla is generally depicted as an older woman, a grandmother. She cherishes a calm and harmonious home, where she can sit in her rocking chair knitting or crocheting. She detests unnecessary noise, chaos and conflict. Her powers are amplified through quiet and reflection. Her love for her children and devotees knows no bounds and her energy can illuminate the world around her.
As patron of espiritismo and the misa espiritual, she is the personification of wisdom and illumination, perception, and intellect. She embodies patience and clarity of thought, guiding her children and devotees toward equilibrium and understanding.
Yet like all the Orishas, Oshanla can put up a fight if needed. Though sometimes depicted as frail or trembling, this must not be mistaken for weakness. In one patakí, when pursued by Ogun, she trembled not from fear or exhaustion, but from pure rage, and Ogun had to back off. Another story tells of her renewal, as her life force was restored and she emerged revitalized.
In Cuba and the diaspora, Oshanla is syncretised with Saint Anne, the mother of Mary and grandmother of Jesus. She is honored for her ability to bring tranquility, mental clarity, and harmony into the lives of her devotees and children, reminding them of the power found in patience, wisdom, and inner stillness.
