Tarot and your energetic safety belt:

tips when going for a reading or reading for others.

Tarot is a wonderful tool for self-knowledge and self-exploration. You can use it to help with answers to very basic questions. And you can use it to heighten your intuition and any psychic abilities. How tarot works exactly is a subject of ongoing debate. People with spiritual or religious beliefs approach tarot differently to people with no beliefs or real interest in spirituality or religion. But regardless of your beliefs, tarot can work and provide answers for anyone.

As a spiritualist I specialise in different spiritual practices and have my own approach to tarot, based on my own experience of working with the cards.

I do not believe that tarot is harmful in any way. I do think there is sometimes fear-mongering based on personal issues, as well as generational trauma. In the past people in the west were sometimes persecuted for spiritual practices outside the church. Memories of this can be passed down through generations. In my view, clearing away this trauma by positive experiences with spirituality can be healing for everyone.

I do think it is useful to approach this beautiful tool with care and respect. Your attitude and approach to the cards will influence your experience. Whether you are going for your first reading or are thinking of reading tarot for friends, the same principles apply.

1. Be in a stable state of mind
Try not to read tarot and best not to go for a reading when you’re feeling overwhelmed, desperate, anxious, or emotionally unstable. If difficult feelings are ongoing, tarot can still be supportive—but aim to be reasonably calm and centered before starting a session.
2. Stay physically and mentally clear
Avoid readings when under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Take a moment to refresh yourself—washing your hands, wearing clean clothes, and creating a sense of order can help you feel more focused and present. You don’t need to dress in black or use crystals. A simple white cloth, with a flower and a white candle can work just as well.
4. Prepare your space
Keep your reading space clean and uncluttered. A tidy environment can help your mind feel clearer and more focused. If you use a cloth or objects, choose ones that feel comfortable and supportive to you. You don’t need to dress in black or display crystals. A simple white cloth with a flower and a white candle can work just as well. I like to have something present that reminds me of my spiritual guides and signals that they’re welcome. However, avoid strong smelling scents when reading for others. Not everyone responds well.

5. Set an intention
Use a simple prayer, mantra, or grounding phrase to center yourself.
It doesn’t have to be religious—anything that brings calm, clarity, and a sense of warmth or stability can be helpful.
6. Stay grounded
Grounding means staying connected to your body and surroundings.
You can do this by:
• Taking a short walk outside
• Noticing your breath
• Paying attention to physical sensations

7. Take care of basic needs
Have water nearby and make sure you’re physically comfortable. Small things like hydration can make a big difference in clarity.
Ethics and Personal Responsibility
If you are reading tarot for other people, you have a special responsibility.
• Never consent to using tarot to interfere with or manipulate a third person.
• Be honest and fair.
• Be aware of the impact of your words.
• Stay grounded – avoid fantasies of power or superiority
A healthy approach is based on:
• Self-awareness
• Emotional balance
• Respect for others

Keep in mind that:
• Your thoughts, habits, and emotional patterns shape your experience
• Harmful behaviors and mindsets (like addiction or obsession) can reinforce negative cycles
• Positive habits (like reflection, honesty, and care) strengthen your stability and your experience with tarot.
• If in the unlikely event that you or th eperson you’re doing the reading for are triggered by the cards or the message, take all the time you need to reflect and give yourself the self-care you need.
• Like many things that feel good and have a positive impact on your life, tarot can be addictive. Avoid asking the same questions over and over again and expecting a different answer. This is quite common behaviour but generally unproductive. Courtesy and respect are key.
