Yes — anyone who approaches tarot with the right mindset and a genuine will to learn can begin reading at a basic level.

Tarot cards hold deep layers of magical and spiritual wisdom, and many people are naturally drawn to them. Those with strong intuition or a connection to the spiritual realm often feel a special kind of pull. The good news is that no special initiation or certificate is needed to buy a deck of tarot cards and start exploring. There are plenty of books, websites, and blogs available to guide you along the way. Many people start very simply by pulling a single card each day. Shuffle the cards well and choose one without looking at the images. Take your time to consider what the image says to you, and then look up its meaning in a guidebook or online. My website carries a section with the basic meanings of the cards:

It often works well to make this a regular practice in a set place, and at a set time such as after morning coffee or before bed. From there, you could move on to pulling three cards at a time. This could signify the past, present and future. Or what you want to let go of, what you want to keep and what you want to grow. You’ll soon notice that your intuition begins to deepen, and even a card you know little about may start to speak to you. Like any skill, learning to read tarot well takes patience, practice, and dedication. If you’re serious about becoming a good reader, it can be helpful to seek guidance from a mentor or teacher on a regular basis. With so many resources available, take your time and see what feels like the right fit for you.

Spiritual Protection: Your Energetic Safety Belt

There’s nothing scary about tarot, but it’s important to pay attention to spiritual protection — especially as you begin to explore more deeply. Think of it as your energetic safety belt: it helps you feel safe, centred, and grounded while working with subtle energies. Soon, I’ll be sharing a detailed article on spiritual protection on my blog — so keep an eye on my posts and website if you’d like to learn more about this topic.

Which Tarot Deck Should You Start With?

For beginners, the Rider–Waite–Smith deck is the best choice. It’s the most widely used tarot deck in the world and serves as the foundation for countless others. The imagery is rich in classical symbolism, which makes it easier to remember and interpret the meanings of the cards. This is the deck I use when I’m teaching. In my personal practice, when reading for others, I mainly work with the classical and beautiful Thoth deck, which allows me to dive in even deeper. There are hundreds of different decks available. Some people love to collect them, while others find one favourite that feels just right and stay with it.

Basic Structure

As you begin to explore tarot more deeply, it’s helpful to understand its basic structure. The deck is divided into the Major and Minor Arcana. The four suits are connected to the classical elements of water, fire, earth, and air. Each suit, element, and number holds its own wisdom, helping you connect with the deeper layers of meaning in a reading. You’ll find detailed information about the tarot’s structure, along with card meanings, on my website at:

You’ll also want to start fine-tuning your intuition. When you spread the cards, pay attention to how they connect with one another and how they make you feel. Your intuition is a powerful ally that works hand in hand with your knowledge. You may notice that you naturally use certain spiritual gifts while reading. Some people are born with a strong sense of intuition, clairvoyance, or empathy; others discover these gifts gradually through practice. I’ll be posting a blog on spiritual gifts in the near future, so keep an eye on my website to learn more.
The more you learn to balance knowledge with inner or spiritual guidance, the more naturally your readings will flow.
